SUSPICIOUS REALITY

So you are near me,
And once again
I am lost at sea;
Your fragrance seeping
Through the pores of my brain
Waking up slumbering memories
That burst into mournful refrains.

Yesterdays suck me in
My today looks merely grim;


I was better in that picture with you
When we laughed and you were happy too.

But the mad shadow stalked me from birth
It shuddered, it giggled with barely disguised mirth
In your arms it whispered horror
I opened my ears and let in the terror;

So I saw shadows where only dusty trails lay
And heard voices where only the wind held sway.

I saw lipstick stains where only purity stayed
And with a mind drenched in suspicion
I drove you away.

I have split us in two
Never mind you, it was I through and through.

Now I wander from room to room
Taking in whiffs of lingering perfume
From the shirts you’ve left behind.
